MT5 desktop: check custom-symbol data before backtesting

Check local symbol settings, import options and history-replacement risks before using custom data for analysis or testing.

Custom symbols support charts and testing, but cannot execute real trades. Adding one does not add an FXTRADING.com trading instrument.

Prepare the symbol and data

Check

What to verify

Separate name

From Market Watch, open symbol management and Create Custom Symbol. Use a name distinct from broker symbols; a later server-name collision deletes the custom symbol.

Settings first

Set specifications before importing. Changing formula, tick size/value, chart mode, point value or precision deletes minute/tick history.

Import preview

Select Bars or Ticks. Check the separator, skipped columns/rows, hourly time shift and selected-row option against the file preview.

Bar timeframe

History is stored as M1 bars. Importing higher-timeframe bars leaves gaps below that timeframe.

Replacement interval

Import replaces the whole file time range, including existing rows absent from the file. Back up data first.

Row quality

Duplicate bar times are errors; multiple identical ticks are allowed. Arrange ticks from earliest to latest.

Testing dependencies

Required currency-conversion symbols must be available. Custom-symbol optimisation cannot use MQL5 Cloud Network.

Keep the original file and settings separately. Review a separate test copy before replacing useful history; stop if timestamps, field alignment or coverage differ from your intended dataset.
