How do trading commissions work?

A trading commission is a charge connected with opening or closing an eligible position. Whether a commission applies depends on the trading account, instrument and account currency.

Which accounts use trading commissions?

The current Raw Spread account uses a separate commission in addition to the spread. Standard, Standard Pro and Standard Plus use spread-based pricing and do not normally apply a separate trading commission.

Legacy account types can have different pricing. Use the contract specifications and account information displayed for the account concerned.

Why can the commission differ between instruments?

The commission can depend on:

  • the financial instrument;

  • the trading account type;

  • the size of the position;

  • the account's base currency; and

  • the charging basis shown in the contract specification.

A phrase such as “from” or “as low as” describes a possible starting rate, not one rate for every instrument.

What does “per lot per side” mean?

  • Per lot means the charge is calculated using the position volume.

  • Per side means the opening side and closing side can each form part of the total commission.

  • Round trip means the combined opening and closing cost.

The platform may display or post the total commission at a particular stage of the trade. Use the transaction and contract specification for the account rather than assuming that every account posts commission at the same time.

How do I check the commission before trading?

  1. Sign in to the trading platform using the correct account and server.

  2. Open the contract specification for the instrument.

  3. Check the commission basis, contract size and account currency.

  4. Review the estimated trading cost before placing the order.

  5. After execution, check the order or deal record for the commission actually posted.

Why can my amount differ from an example?

Examples may use a different instrument, position size, account currency or pricing schedule. Currency conversion can also affect the amount displayed in your account currency.

If the posted commission appears inconsistent with the current contract specification, contact FXTRADING.com and provide the trading-account number, order or deal number, instrument, volume and relevant timestamps. Never provide a password or one-time code.
