MT4 and MT5: Features and performance compared

Compare charting, strategy testing, device performance and trade execution, and understand what choosing MT4 or MT5 changes for your FXT account.

MT4 and MT5 both support trading, chart analysis and Expert Advisors (EAs) in their desktop applications. MT5 adds analytical and testing capabilities, but choosing MT5 does not guarantee faster trade execution, less slippage or better trading results. Compare the tools you need and the performance of your actual setup.

Charting and strategy testing

MT5 offers more chart timeframes and additional built-in analytical tools. This can be useful when examining the same market at several intervals. More tools do not make a trading signal more accurate by themselves; choose the tools that suit your analysis.

The desktop MT5 Strategy Tester supports strategies using multiple instruments and parallel optimization passes through computing agents. MT4 uses an older, single-threaded tester. These are testing capabilities, not a promise that every calculation or live order is faster. Test speed also depends on the strategy, historical data, modeling settings and available resources.

Performance on your device

A slow chart or unresponsive window concerns the application running on your device. Numerous charts, large histories, intensive indicators or EAs, and other running applications can increase the load. Software version, operating system, available memory and processor capacity also affect responsiveness.

For a useful comparison, use comparable charts, indicators and workloads on the same device. Check whether the delay persists with unnecessary charts or programs removed. There is no universal rule that MT5 always needs more resources or that MT4 always performs worse on older computers.

Trade execution is a separate process

Sending a trade request and having it executed are different stages. A responsive terminal can send a request promptly while execution still depends on the connection, trading server, instrument's execution rules and market conditions. The confirmation or error returned by the server matters more than how quickly a button responds.

Do not assume switching from MT4 to MT5 guarantees quicker fills or removes slippage during volatile markets. If investigating an execution issue, distinguish a frozen interface, a connection problem and the actual execution result. Compare the same instrument and similar conditions; a backtest or a single demo trade cannot prove live execution quality.

Your FXT account and custom programs

All four FXT trading account types can be opened on MT4 or MT5. Both real and demo accounts can also be traded through Web Trader and FXTRADING.com App. Choosing another application does not automatically convert an existing MT4 account into an MT5 account or migrate its positions.

Custom programs must match the platform: MT4 uses MQL4 programs and MT5 uses MQL5 programs. A familiar indicator name does not establish compatibility. Obtain a compatible version and check its settings and behavior before relying on it.

How to make a practical comparison

Use a demo account to check the features, chart behavior and compatible tools needed for your workflow. Evaluate historical tests separately from current trading. A favorable backtest is not a guarantee of future results, and demo observations do not establish identical live conditions.

Desktop features should not be assumed to exist in Web Trader or a mobile application. EAs cannot be installed or run in FXTRADING.com App. Choose the platform that supports your required tools and device, rather than relying on a general claim that one platform is always faster.
